“Tomorrow” by Natalie Zepeda

When you’re with your friends

The hours of the day are just a number.

We have no set time to meet or set time to leave.

But we know we will see each other tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will

Go to the spot by the shore,

The spot with slabs of broken concrete where the rebels showcase their graffiti art,

On top of it all we will stand

Being the first to try the sweet Michigan air blowing from the east

Untainted.

Tomorrow we will

Mock each other about our shared pasts that left us with more regrets than pleasant memories

The past that turned the high pitched voices of the boys into

Hoarse, rough voices of men

Tomorrow we will sneak up to the garage roof while everyone is sleeping

And paint the stars with the ashes of our cigarettes.

Stars that will light up the night until

Tomorrow.
